‘House Of The Dragon’ Renewed For Season 3 By HBO: Are the creators being too ambitious?

House of the Dragon, a prequel to the renowned Game of Thrones series, has been officially renewed for a third season ahead of its Season 2 release on Sunday.

Season 2 is set to be back on Sunday with the awaited civil war between the Greens (pro-Aegon and Alicent Hightower) and the Blacks (pro-Rhaenyra Targaryen) with the House Targaryen.

Fans are already excited and ready for eight episodes of bloody carnage. Even before the release of Season 2, a shocking turn of events noted that showrunner Ryan Condal and writer Sara Hess, with their teams, were already in motion to plant the seeds for Season 3.

In a statement released in May this year, Condal confidently confirmed that another season was already in the pipeline and was being written even before HBO gave the show any commitment to renewing for a third season.

We all know the phenomenon the Game of Thrones series created; it was about time that we got more out of this story than just the eight seasons. House of the Dragon released its season 1 in August 2022. As expected, it was renewed for another season, which is due to be released on Sunday. But isn’t it a bit too ambitious for the creators and HBO to release a statement about its renewal for another season?

History has taught us that being a little too ambitious sometimes disappoints, especially in Hollywood. HBO could’ve waited for the audience to process and digest the new season before confirming a new season, as this can impact the current season ahead of its release. This decision can be a game changer, for better or worse.

Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, said, “George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producer, cast and crew have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon” in the official press release.

Last we heard, the audience was the final critic of how good a show is, and this statement sounds a little more presumptuous. It is fair that they are confident in what they have created, but they should remember that the audience has the power and the intelligence to decide whether a show is good.

Many shows, like Firefly and Freaks and Geeks, were expected to have another season, but the audience did not accept them as the creators had imagined, and HBO should take this into account before it’s too late.
