With such a small population, Ireland has undoubtedly made a mark in Hollywood. With 14 nominations in different categories in 2023, Irish people are making their presence known worldwide.

But the breakthrough came this year after Cillian Murphy’s win in the Best Actor category. Irish Actors have been working in Hollywood and making history, but the appreciation for it can only be seen in recent years. Cillian Murphy’s winning the Oscars opens a new world of recognition that will surely change the face of cinema for Irish actors.

In the last few years, 2023 was indeed the year of the Irish. Stellar performances and movies produced or based in Ireland significantly impacted the audience. Cillian Murphy stole the show with his unmatched performance in Oppenheimer; even though his looks are indubitably Irish (it doesn’t get more Irish than him), he made us all believe in his portrayal of a Jewish American Scientist.

Another significant breakthrough for Irish movies and actors was The Banshee of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and our favorite Barry Keoghan, which had nine Academy Award nominations in 2023.

Many prominent actors have been critically acclaimed in Hollywood, but we all await their acceptance as commercial actors. Irish Actors like Paul Mescal, Colin Farrell, Jessie Buckley, and Andrew Scott have recently gained much popularity. Their performances have been very well recognized and appreciated by the audience. Despite these famous actors making it big in the industry, there needs to be more recognition for less famous actors.

In November last year, audiences witnessed Michael Fassbender sling across Paris in The Killer. It was one of the most outstanding performances of all time and one of his most significant roles in the last couple of years. Barry Keoghan, a young and talented upcoming star, left us in disbelief with his performance in Saltburn, which had its famous moments. Barry made us sympathize with the character and left us appalled by the mere obsession with the character.

All said and done, we know that Irish actors have been a prominent part of the International Film Circuit, but with the recognition received in the last few years, these actors and movies will indeed become very widely accepted and household names. Wins for actors like Cillian Murphy will open doors for many more talented and less recognized actors on the long overdue pedestal.
