Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion Is Inspiring, But Suffers From Genre Repetitiveness

Actor Kartik Aryan and Director Kabir Khan shine, as Chandu Champion serves an Inspiring tale of Mr. Muralikant Petkar.

Kartik Aaryan has ventured into character-driven roles with Kabir Khan‘s latest film, based on the inspiring life of Padma Shri awardee Mr. Muralikant Petkar, also known as Chandu Champion. The film demanded unwavering dedication from both Kartik and Kabir, given the inherently compelling nature of Petkar’s journey.

Biopics are often considered safer bets than fictional narratives due to their realistic and motivational themes. Chandu Champion narrates the extraordinary life of Muralikant Petkar, skillfully presented by Kabir Khan not just as a director but as a master storyteller. Despite some directional imperfections, Khan’s storytelling shines through.

In the early 1950s, young Muralikant witnessed Khashaba Jadhav’s triumphant return from the Olympics, sparking a dream to win gold for India. Despite facing ridicule as “Chandu Champion” and doubts from his coach, Murali (played by Kartik Aaryan) surprises everyone with a victory that changes his path towards a military career.

Under Tiger Ali’s guidance (played by Vijay Raaj), Murali becomes an Olympic sensation but faces setbacks that test his resilience, including severe wartime injuries that leave him paralyzed. Will he fulfill his dream of bringing Olympic gold to India? Thus begins his journey of resurgence.

Chandu Champion, while inspiring, suffers from repetitive storytelling and fictional embellishments. However, it underscores the importance of telling stories like Muralikant Petkar’s, even if they echo others. Directors and screenwriters must find innovative ways to present such narratives.

While the film has flaws, including historical inaccuracies and predictable conflicts, it delivers a compelling story with a well-crafted screenplay. Though reminiscent of his previous works, Khan’s direction captures emotional depth effectively.

Performance-wise, Kartik Aaryan and Vijay Raaj shine, with Aaryan displaying commendable growth in a challenging role, albeit occasionally slipping into his signature charm. Despite some missteps in character development and dialogue, supporting cast members contribute effectively.

Despite areas for improvement in music and historical authenticity, Chandu Champion is a testament to Kabir Khan’s ability to create emotionally resonant cinema. It may not be his magnum opus, but it honors Muralikant Petkar’s remarkable journey, making it a significant addition to Khan’s repertoire.
